Quora: Job Hunting Via Network Sites

Quora’s relationship with the Q&A format is no longer what it was. After Monday, you can also use the site to arrange content from around the web on Pinterest-like boards.

While the move seems like an odd one for this startup most often defined as a Q&A platform, it also opens up an opportunity for Quora to become the most prominent interest-based network — a chance the platform didn’t stand while still married to Q&A.

“It’s like if it were really easy to create lots of sub-Twitter accounts for yourself,” Quora co-founder Charlie Cheever tells Mashable. “Social services tend to pull you toward a set of shared interests within a group, but if you’re interested in something else, there’s not a great place to talk about it.”

The new Board feature can be extremely helpful for the eager job seeker. Interest in a specific company can be translated into a question for others on the site. Insider perspective or even just additional knowledge unavailable on the company’s website can give someone the edge in an interview. Or possibly one might get information on an available position. It’s certainly a stone worth turning over in a market where the rock pile is disturbingly empty.

Still on the Trail

So, my last entry was all about the path I have been taking to establishing an online presence. It is a bit amazing to think of all the hours of thought, writing, planning, creating, traveling, networking, not to mention learning, have gone into where I find myself today in the process. Although I still have a ways to go, I am finding this trail to be one that is so fulfilling that the prospect of many more hours of work and investment seem more of a pleasure than a work endeavor. In fact, I am excited about the prospect of creating an ever deeper connection with those who I have met along the way and building on the foundations of so many new possibilities. I look forward to meeting new friends as well and anticipate the many opportunities that lie ahead for all of us. I am grateful that each of you have joined me on this journey and thank you for your participation in helping me make these sites all you need them to be!

Beating a Path

When I first started my blogs on WordPress it was really without much understanding of what could come of it.

What I see as possibilities now, however, take on a much broader scope. It has become increasingly apparent that what I have wanted to do all along with my website will be made 100 times easier by utilizing the potential of one blog service. And so, when I am creating my website my “shop” links will go straight to my blogs where the bulk of my work will be done. And where the bulk of my fun is had. I was complicating things to be sure, so I am thrilled to have a new means of adding to my site and creating new possibilities for my visitors in the meantime. It does require a bit of learning and taking action to get a blog going, but once it’s started, the hard work is done. My hope is that my blogs will help others find their blogging voice as well and soon we will be blogging together. Plus, we have the sense of community that lies at the heart of my business idea. I love the concept of people all over the world, from so many different walks of life, coming together on my site to share their lives and interests. I am hoping you all will find it equally appealing and that it will bring life to your dreams as well.

Just when I think I am getting in a bit of a groove with my online endeavors, some kind of glitch comes along and I’m back to playing catch up. But, I seem to finally be getting caught up after some minor computer issues and am happy to report on some very cool stuff I have become privy to in the meantime.

One of the newer fun toys I have been playing with lately is Stumble and I have found oodles of great sites with it. It’s free, simply to use and just takes you to all kinds of great places. I feel a bit like a world traveler when I hop on and it typically only takes a few clicks of the mouse and I have stumbled upon a handful of new, delightful websites. You even get to select the categories or topics that are of interest to you, so if you’re needing to know what others on the planet make out of rope fiber, just plug in your search criteria and away you go. While you are traveling through the vast www you will not only find others that share your interest, but probably find some cool complementary interests. And, if all that isn’t enough you can just enter a whole new hobby and start all over.

DesignerDaily.com is an example of one of the fun sites I happened upon. I love that I can easily add to my designing options and also see what others are doing with their stuff as well. And, if you find one good site, there’s often links to others, and links from those to blogs, to feeds, to twitterers…and your building a network…it’s just good stuff all around. All Things Considered

For some crazy reason I ended up updating almost every email account and social networking account I have today. A funny thing happened in the course of doing so that stopped me in my technology tromping tracks. I have fallen off my blogging bandwagon for a bit, having moved and in the midst of about 10 too many projects. It isn’t the first time and surely won’t be the last, but this time it was sort of a wake up call for me. I suddenly realized that this isn’t something that I do because I have to, it’s something I do because I need to. There was this compulsion to get on this blog and tell the world all that I have been able to do in the last few months and all that is still left to do. I am amazed when I think about what opportunities lie ahead in the fields that I am moving into. I am equally amazed how people have appeared in my life at just the right time to lead me along this journey. That being said, all of that seems like a means to an end.

I recently had a discussion with a friend about the value of money and how the joy of making a lot is that then it can be used for something beneficial. I’m not going to get on my soap box and talk about how people need to do more for the less fortunate and try to convince people that we have so much to be thankful for and we should be giving things away. I suppose those things are probably true, especially for many of us who live in one of the wealthiest counties in America. But, the issue to me is not so much about how much we are going to give, but what it is that drives us, what it is that truly matters to us and when the bottom line becomes threatened, as it has these last few months to be sure, how do we respond? I suppose we could be angry and bitter and be justified in it. I certainly am not going to condemn anyone for it. I have had my own share of frustration with the pathetic lack of humanity and basic decency that some people have displayed. At the same time though, I am deeply thankful that I don’t wake up each morning and have to live with what they do. I find that the joy that I have and the happiness I experienced in my life by doing even a small good thing, not to mention the bigger ones, far outweigh the pleasure I would get from a diamond mined by enslaved children or by having the right connections at the expense of all those who really care about me. It just seems that if we could stop for a moment and see all that we have, we would see that we cannot possibly give enough away to make up for all that’s been given to us.

So, money is not the root of all evil, but the love of it is. Is it possible that we could make it a mission to try to give as much as possible and in the process reap the many benefits not only as a society but as individuals as well? I have known wealthy people who were far unhappier than poor people I have known. And I have known wealthy people you would never know had any money because they knew it wouldn’t buy their happiness. I am always happy when I am with those types of people because it’s clear that they too are truly happy. Maybe it’s kind of crazy, but all things considered, could we turn the “bailouts” into a bailout from our selfishness? What if we took the less we have and made it more by really appreciating the people in our lives and praying for our enemies? And what if we gave just a little, even if we don’t really have it, just because it will come back to us? Some call it karma, I call it goodness. Give it out and eventually it comes back to you, even when others may try to stop it. There will always be haters but they are the ultimate losers and I, for one, will not be found in their circles. Sock Puppet Bailout

Well, most of you may not be able to find the link for this video because it is so far at the bottom of my RSS feed list. But, I have to recommend it because it is just silly and yet at the same time a perfect portrayal of congress’ attitude toward the average american business person and the state of their business. There is little question that we have been taken for all we are worth and then some by big business. I think this little video is a clever take on what that has meant for many. There is a bit of bitter irony in it, and yet, it is a bit of a laugh so you don’t cry piece. Maybe that’s the best we’re going to get.

I can’t believe the stuff the web is affording us. It’s a whole new world in some senses even then it was just a few years ago. But, beyond that, the web is a vast world of opportunities we didn’t have even just ten years ago. It’s a good reminder to me that there was a time that we had to use a card catalog and encyclopedias. Somehow it puts things into perspective and I am propelled into this sort of wonderland where there are ideas and possibilities right at my fingertips. And it’s not that I haven’t been using the web for some time now. But, there are new things happening right now that are changing the face of it rather drastically. And, I don’t think that is going to change anytime soon. In fact, quite the opposite. I think the web is going to become a world that encompasses so much more than what we have previously envisioned. I am excited in a way I can’t quite describe to be a part of this process somewhat. It is my hope that I will be able to provide you with at least a sampling of the wealth of just cool stuff. So, stay tuned because there’s so much more after these messages…

I have slowly been adding links that I find to be useful and borderline necessary as time goes by. I am going to try to avoid overloading the sight with these links, and eventually I will likely be moving them around to more functional or appropriate places within my site. However, for now, the new financial link is going here because it gives it a home in a somewhat related habitat and when the time comes for it to move I will certainly alert you. It just happened that this link provided me with some much needed and timely info and I think it may well do the same for you. Moving along nicely

So, the last several weeks have netted some great work results. Sure, I have a long way to go. But, I have some of the most unbelievable moral support, for what might be one of the first times ever, in regards to my work schemes. When it was massage, everyone was a naysayer mostly. Whatever, didn’t matter because I did it and I’m pretty good and I like it and that’s what it’s all about. But, that’s another work world. This is the new world that’s coming and I am seriously cramming for it. I am definitely behind on my education in this arena, but I am working hard to catch up and with some good people coming along side me I think I might get there. I keep thinking it’s going to be tough, but the more I try the funner it becomes. I think that has surprised me as much as anything. The truth is, I never expected that any other work could be as fun as massage. So, when I started getting into this web stuff, I was shocked at how it was this new sort of fun and challenge and possibility unlike anything I have attempted yet. The truth is, I keep thinking it’s a divine gift because I can’t remember when I have had such a sense of someone else being in control of the process. It’s a little eerie at times, and then at other times I just smile because I know it’s right. So, when you’re working toward the dream and it seems like you’re doing it all alone…come back here. You’re never doing it, or anything else alone. And, this will be the place you can talk about it, shout about it, beg for help, cry that you want to give up already…whatever you need to do. It’s not too much to expect or ask for; you have your dreams and goals for a reason and you have to believe that and keep going, even if it means suffering for a while to do it. There’s always time left…and a lot of it, so don’t get stuck in the moment. Just think about the big picture and keep moving along nicely.
